Why this trip?
If there is anywhere more spectacular to take photographs than the Isle of Skye, we don’t know it. Stunning scenery, inland and coastal, is all around you. The light changes constantly, and there are spectacular locations off the beaten track in every direction. We are delighted to have teamed up with the multi-award winning landscape photographer Nick Hanson for these Workshops. Nick has been based on the Isle of Skye from March to September the last three years delivering photography workshops for “traditional camera” photographers, and so he knows the area like the back of his hand. He is also an excellent drone pilot, and hence knows the perfect locations on the Isle of Skye where a drone can capture unique and arresting images simply not possible with a traditional camera.

A Really Big Drone Adventure
Skye, 12th – 15th October 2020 is NOW FULLY BOOKED
NEW DATES added 17th – 20th October 2020
I will be driving from Chester to Inverness on Sunday 11 October, staying overnight in Inverness. Anyone who wants to join me is welcome to jump in. There are currently two seats free. Come to Chester, or I can pick you up from the train station anywhere sensible en-route (eg Glasgow). All I ask is a contribution to petrol money.
I can arrange accommodation in Inverness if you would like me to – just let me know. This will be at your expense.
Monday 12 October we will collect our hired minibus in Inverness, and set off for Skye at 11am. So please be in Inverness by this time on 12 October if you would like to catch a lift to Skye.
If the weather is right, and the light feels good, we may stop at Eilan Donan Castle to shoot it with our drones on the way to Skye. Or we may press on to Skye, and fit in an evening flight on Skye instead.
Flights to Inverness
Easyjet and British Airways have daily services to Inverness from Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton, at very good prices at present for the times of our trip. Logan Air fly to Inverness from Manchester twice a day.
Lockdown has its (small) benefits. Hame Hotel is a lovely hotel near Dunvegan Castle (one of the places we will be flying our drones), in the North of the Island. Usually, rooms are booked individually. Post-lockdown, while they find their way, they are only offering the hotel for exclusive bookings. So I have been able to book the entire hotel. It is not flash, but it is fine.
There is a log fire, beautiful views of the loch, and excellent cooked breakfasts. As well as comfy pillows, soft towels, and according to the reviews, the friendliest staff imaginable. You can see more about the hotel here: https://hamehotel.com/
I think with this reservation, we have the best of all worlds. A place to ourselves, so laptops, drones and camera equipment can be left lying around without worry. We will have ample space to review photos and discuss plans for the next day without getting in anyone’s way. And we have staff to cook and clean for us.
We will also eat dinner at the hotel. I have asked for example menus and prices. The cost of lunches and dinners is not included in the cost of the trip.
Transfers to and from Inverness
I will be driving the minibus back to Inverness at the end of the first Masterclass, on Thursday 15 October. Leaving Skye by no later than 1pm, after flying our drones in the morning. Journey time to Inverness is around 3 hours, so you can plan to book flights or trains from Inverness for any time after, I would suggest, 5.30pm on Thursday 15 October. If you are booking onto the second Masterclass and want to start your stay early just ask us about extra nights. If you arrive early then there is the offer of a lift to Skye from Inverness on the 15th
The minibus will repeat the trip from Skye to Inverness on the 17th to drop off anyone from the first masterclass who has extended their stay, and pick up anyone arriving for the second masterclass.
Two final return trips from Skye to Inverness will run on the 20th and the 22nd.
I plan to head South in my car on the afternoon of the 22nd stopping the night in Glasgow. Then travelling back to Chester in the morning on the 23rd October. Once again, anyone who wants is very welcome to join me on the way back South, either all the way back to Chester, or as far as Glasgow in order to catch a train from there. Only costs will be petrol and accommodation in Glasgow.
If you would like to extend your trip, you are also very welcome to join me at Hame Hotel. We have the entire hotel booked from the 12th through until the 22nd. If you would like to extend your stay we will need a contribution of £120 for one night and £220 for two nights accommodation and breakfasts.
On the days where a Masterclass is not being hosted I may go flying, or I may simply sit and look at the view. I won’t be leading the Masterclass any longer during this period. If I do go out flying, you are very welcome to join me of course, but I don’t want to promise anything.
Megatron – the waterproof Matrice Drone
As those of you who have come on one of these Masterclasses will know, I will be bringing Megatron, our waterproof Matrice 200 drone with me. We can and do fly Megatron in the pouring rain, and in winds up to 35mph, which is not far off gale force. We have achieved some remarkable results in the rain on our Masterclasses to the Lake District and to Dorset.
I would also encourage you to bring your DSLR with you. Nick is a full time photography tutor on Skye, as well as being an excellent drone pilot. So if it is rainy, then we can switch from drones to tripods, and carry on shooting.
